Instagram Hashtags: What's The Big Deal? Do they work or not?

Updated: Nov 20, 2023

In the ever-changing world of social media, Instagram hashtags have sparked both confusion and debate. Do they still have the same level of power as before?

Not quite. Let's examine the hashtag dilemma and determine how to use them.

The days of posting a post with 30 hashtags and getting instant visibility are long gone. The landscape of hashtags has changed but they still have a role, just a more purposeful approach.

1. Quality Over Quantity

First and foremost, take a deep breath and stop stressing over the number of hashtags. It's not about bombarding your post with a multitude of them. In fact, overusing them could make your point less clear. Instead, try to use three to six well-selected hashtags. Variety is the spice of life, so mix it up with some popular ones (1m posts) and niche ones (10k posts). This diversity helps Instagram's algorithm categorize your content effectively.

2. Relevance Is King

If your content revolves around mental health, don't just throw in random hashtags because you want to be found by many people. Opt for ones related to mental well-being, workouts, and similar themes. Your goal is to create a seamless connection between your post and the hashtags you choose.

3. SEO Approach

Use hashtags that the algorithm recognizes, but don't stop there. Incorporate those keywords organically into your content. If your post shouts mental health, make sure your hashtags and content echo the same keywords.

4. Hashtags Don’t Get You Success

Let's debunk a myth: hashtags won't magically make or break your social media success. There's no secret shortcut. Instead of fixating on as many hashtags you can use, focus on the core elements—your content, strategy, and message. A well-thought-out post with meaningful content will always outshine the most meticulously hashtagged mediocrity.

5. It's All About Information

At the end of the day, Instagram's success comes down to information. Address burning questions, provide valuable insights, and offer content that resonates with your audience. Hashtags are just a small part of the equation; the real magic happens when your content captivates and engages.

Embrace hashtags as helpful tools, they’re the assistants, not the main key. Take a pragmatic approach, use them wisely, and channel your energy into crafting compelling content. There's no need for overthinking; success on social media is a journey, not a destination.
